The installation of stone veneer is quite simple, but it is worth preparing for it before starting work. An appropriate approach to the task and theoretical knowledge as well as a bit of willingness will make the stone veneer easy to install and will also look beautiful for a long time and our effort will be appreciated by every household member and guest visiting the house. Below you will find all the necessary information you need to properly install the stone veneer.
Choosing the right Stone Veneer
The first task before assembly is, of course, the selection of a specific stone veneer that best suits our taste. There are many models on the market that can be adapted to your preferences and the nature of the room. It is worth taking care of making sure that the colors dominating in the sheet you are interested in will match the interior of the room. It should also be remembered here that stone veneer is a completely natural material, therefore it does not appear in the pattern made in a pattern and each sheet of natural stone will slightly differ from the previous one.
Stone veneer – correct measurement of the surface to be covered with
Correct measurement of the surface covered by us will make the assembly accurate and aesthetic. For this to happen, you need to measure the length and height of the wall or the element you are interested in. Then, subtract any openings such as doors or windows from your m2 result. The result obtained in this way is the amount of material necessary to perform the assembly, but it is worth ordering about 5% of the surplus, which will provide us with security in the event of any corrections.
Preparation of tools
Before starting the assembly, you should also prepare all the necessary tools and materials. These are:
- angle grinder or sheet metal shears – suitable stone veneer for the glued surface,
- veneer glue – specialized, quick-drying polymer-based glue to attach the veneer to the surface to be glued,
- primer for walls,
- veneer impregnation – useful for the final protection of the veneer against the damaging effects of weather conditions,
- spirit level,
- paint roller equipped with a handle,
- sandpaper – necessary for sanding the surface of the cut veneer sheet.
Preparation of the surface for sticking
Before the assembly itself, the entire surface to be glued should be prepared well. This means that it is thoroughly cleaned and degreased. In some situations, it is also worth using a wall primer to increase the bonding of the adhesive.
In the case of thin sheets, it may be tempting to mount it directly on a wall covered with mortar or concrete. In this case, however, it is also worth remembering to clean the surface.
It is also important that the veneer sheets are completely dry and fit well. Before the assembly itself, it is also worth trying on and numbering the sheets accordingly to make your work faster and easier.
Stone veneer – gluing sheets
The most appropriate adhesive for the assembly of this type of product is the assembly adhesive made of MS polymer. It is available in tubes and in packs for machine and manual squeezing. It is assumed that the average use of this type of glue is 1 kg per 1 m2 of the glued surface. Remember to apply it only to the back side of the sheet, following the perimeter and through its center, and then spread it over the entire surface with a notched trowel. If the surface of the stone veneer becomes dirty with glue, wait until the glue is completely dry and gently remove the dirt by hand. In order to protect your health, you must remember to properly ventilate the room where the installation takes place.
Pressing the veneer
The appropriate way of pressing the veneer is a guarantee of the durability of the assembly. For this to happen, put the sheet against the wall and then get rid of the air underneath and press the decorative stone evenly against the wall. The best tool for this task is a paint roller with an appropriately long handle. However, it should be remembered that the pressure must not be too strong, otherwise we can expect glue leakage.
Grouting veneer sheets
Stone veneer is a material that should be glued with the butt joint method. This means that properly cut sheets are placed close to each other and joined sideways. Installation can also be done with a thin stone-colored grout. In such cases, however, it is best to protect the sides of the sheets with masking tape, which will prevent their permanent staining.
Natural stone – impregnation
Striving for the best and most accurate assembly, it is also worth protecting the stone veneer with appropriate impregnants. These are measures that harden the surface and protect it against changing weather conditions and mechanical damage.
Health and safety and precautionary measures
Stone veneer is a material covered with fiberglass on the underside, therefore all precautions should be taken during its installation. Never give up gloves, a dust mask and glasses when cutting the sheets. It is also very important to protect the lungs, eyes and skin against fiberglass dust and perform all work in a well-ventilated room.
Stone veneers – installation on old tiles
Stone veneer is an extremely universal material, so it can be mounted on old tiles without having to peel them off. Stone veneer can be glued directly to cleaned old tiles, which saves a lot of our time.
How To Install Flexible Stone Veneer On A Door
Decorative stone can also be mounted on the door, but remember to prepare it properly. Stone veneers should be sanded with sandpaper and the glued surface should be cleaned and degreased.
Thin natural slate stone veneer is suitable for this type of task because it is light and flexible. A single sheet weighs approximately 1.5 kg and measures 122 x 61 cm x 2mm. Thanks to this, the decorative stone does not overload the door and thus does not damage its structure.
In this type of assembly, it is worth remembering to use an appropriate MS polymer glue and spread it on the surface of the sheet with a notched trowel. The glue must be spread in an even and thin layer so that it does not leak when pressed against the door surface. When pressing the veneer with a paint roller, you should also take care to get rid of any air bubbles accumulated during assembly. To do this, work with the roller making movements from the center of the sheet towards its outer edges.
The assembly of stone veneer sheets is a multi-stage task, however, appropriate preparation and the use of well-chosen tools will achieve the same effect as in the case of professional assembly. For complete success, all you need to do is follow the steps outlined and a bit of good will to enjoy the beautiful veneer for a long time.
